The 5th European Championship has come to and end! 12 hanchan were played over three days in search of Europe’s next title holder.

Before even the start, pundits were suggesting that Russia was going to clean up and they weren’t wrong with the top two of the podium spaces occupied by Russian nationals. However, special guest and 2014 WRC Champion, Hiroshi Yamai, took third place.

A special draw also took place for a special donated Nier Automata from Square Enix with the quiz entry operated by Gemma Sakamoto.

The happy winner!

The event was by all accounts a success due to the hard labors of the organizers. Old friendships were renewed and new ones forged over the tiles.

For those players whose appetite for competition was only whet, the ERMC was also the stage for the announcement that the dates for the third World Riichi Championship to be held in Vienna, Austria would be August 26th-30th 2020. Lots of hopeful participants will be scribbling these dates in their diary and studying ranking lists carefully.

Gemma is still traveling back from the event but expect a full report on her return!
