Jenn’s Corner #22: World Series of Mahjong

Hello there! Here I am, back again. I’ve been trying to keep the What Would You Discard questions up to date, but messed up on this weeks first. I fixed it though, so be sure to tell us what you think!
So no “In Garthe’s Hands” column for 2 months and no strategy column from Garthe for 1 month… Maybe you guys could encourage him to get on top of things? I know he’s on a big movie shoot today and it sounds like an amazing project, so we’ll be sure to update for the release.
He has been showing up for the meet-ups almost every week though and they’ve been awesome! We’re taking sign-ups for this weekend, so don’t miss it! Details are here.
For the past 2 months at RM we’ve been working hard to be part of this year’s World Series of Mahjong! Things are going great too!
First of all, this year’s event was announced last December. It will happen from the 18th-21st of September this year starting with a Reach Mahjong circuit event and then going into the WSOM Main Event. The field is going to be huge this year!
RM is taking sign-ups and anyone that signs up for the WSOM Main Event through us gets a special player’s package! We’ll have t-shirts and more, so sign-up and stay tuned for more announcements. The official sign-ups for the main event are being taken on CityLine, but if you want the player’s package, then you’ll need to use our registration form first. The necessary links are all at the bottom of this column.
The official rules for the WSOM Reach Event were developed by Shintaro Konno. They are now available on RM.com, so check out that link at the bottom too. Since the Reach event will only be a one-day tournament, certain rules have been adapted to accommodate and make things fair and to try and drive out some of the luck factors.
The $1,000-entry event will start with preliminary rounds in the morning. From this group, about half of the field will be eliminated based on total score. The players that make it to the afternoon rounds will carry over 25% of their score. From that point on, each round (2-4 games depending on the number of players), 1-2 tables (4-8 players) will be eliminated until the final table is decided. Over 80% of the entry fees will be used for prizes for the winning contestants.
Hopefully this event will lead to lots more opportunities for Reach events in the future. Don’t forget about the $5,000-entry Main Event though! There’s a $1,000,000 guaranteed prize pool in that one! Stay tuned and start saving for Macau!
