How much has changed over the past two months.
I remember at the beginning of March when Japan’s schools closed and we decided to cancel my daughter’s ticket to visit my parents in Seattle, we thought we were being a bit overly cautious. At that time we were mostly worried about things changing and her getting stuck somewhere or in quarantine. I wish it was an overreaction and we could be laughing at ourselves right now as we book a new ticket for summer. Obviously that’s not the case. The next week all schools in Seattle were shut down and even restaurants were all closed except for take-out or delivery.
So how to pass the time as the world “Stays Home”?
Why, online mahjong of course!
Right now you can find Japan Professional Mahjong League (JPML) pros on Ron2 every hour of the day, especially on weekends when there are special events. This is a rare time in which pros who spend most of their time working in parlors or in the studio are logging in from home on a regular basis.
This is also a great time to download Mahjong Fight Club SP for your smartphone. All the pros featured in Konami’s Mahjong Fight Club are playing on this app and for the past two weekends there have been special pro weekend events from 9pm to midnight JST on Saturday and Sunday. At the time of publishing this it’s unclear if there will be another event this weekend, but with the Stay Home request in Tokyo, there’s a good chance you’ll find pros playing online.
The beta version of the new Ron2 is also available here. Select your browser and create an account to play.
Since all the other leagues are also on hiatus during the pandemic, for at least the next week or so, look for them on your favorite online platform and get some practice in!
