Mahjong Super Cup is on the way (1)

The holidays are right around the corner and this year ReachMahjong.com is celebrating its 2nd birthday in Macau at the 2nd annual World Mahjong SuperCup! We’re sending a team and you’ll get it all first hand as Garthe, Konno and Jenn represent Japan and Reach for the second time this year.

This year’s event will take place at the Grand Waldo Hotel and Casino alongside PokerStars Macau’s Macau Cup. Mark December 13 and 14 on your calendars because we’ll be playing, posting and podcasting for the duration.

The World Mahjong Supercup uses the 16-tile Taiwanese rules which means a winning hand has 5 groups, and 1 pair for a total of 17 tiles! Flower tiles are used in the same way as the Chinese rules but concealed quads are melded facedown. The hands and points are similar to those you’re used to so it’s an easy transition.

Last year’s tournament took the Guiness record for the biggest Mahjong tournament and with all the qualifiers all over the world that record is expected to be smashed this time around. The record stated 14,886 players concentrated in Taiwan.

But the best part of the Supercup has to be the huge cash prizes. The prize pool is guaranteed at $550,000 with a first prize of $300,000. Not too shabby considering the direct entry fee is only $1500.

If you’re not up-to-date on the Taiwanese rules, not to worry. We’ll be posting them here along with all the details of the event including ReachMahjong’s progress, expectation and of course, results. Stay tuned!!
