Jenn’s Corner: Interview

Dec 22nd, 2009
by jenn

I honestly believe that JPML is the best mahjong league in the world. When I first joined in 2006, the JPML website was in desperate need of a makeover. About a year later, it got that makeover and now our site is booming.

Back in the Saddle

Dec 15th, 2009
by Gemma

A while back I wrote that I was finding it difficult to get excited about mahjong. That period of my life is over and I am playing everyday again!

I’m not sure exactly what changed. Perhaps it was while making my travel preperations for the Red 5s tournament and the Cherry Blossom tournament. Or perhaps it was my mother asking me to teach her mahjong over the Christmas period. Either way, there hasn’t been many days recently when I haven’t played some mahjong.

Dec 11th, 2009
by Gemma

Diverting snippet for those of you with an interest in mahjong and/or China’s history.

Not the most exciting commentary you’ll ever read in your life but… I thought it curious.

Riichi Reaches Guildford UK

Dec 9th, 2009
by Gemma

Earlier this week I asked Ian Fraser of the Guildford riichi club to write a short article introducing their club to the world and summing up their mahjong year. Ian kindly obliged so read on… According to the proverb – “Great oaks from tiny acorns grow.” A small Riichi ‘acorn’ was planted in Guildford in January 2009, in the form of around a dozen local players coming together for a club night. What We Got: Junk Mat

Dec 7th, 2009
by jenn

My favorite product on MahjongMart has to be the Junk Mat. In fact, it was one of the first products we stocked. I first purchased my own Junk Mat in Japan online the year that I graduated from university (we’ll leave that year out of this article) and I loved it from the instant I opened it.

Jenn’s Corner #34: The Quest

Oct 15th, 2009
by jenn

Suddenly being a professional mahjong player in Japan has a new requirement. You also have to be a professional or at least an aspiring Dragon Quest player. That’s right, Dragon Quest IX has been out in Japan for the past few months and that is what all mahjong players are doing between tournaments. Believe it or not these types of games are much more common to find in a professional mahjong player’s DS than, say, a game based on mahjong.

Kinryu Majan Taikai

Sep 20th, 2009
by Gemma

September 26th the Netherlands is hosting the Kinryu Majan Taikai in Almere. Contrary to the tournament’s original intent, they will no longer be playing the yakitori rule.

Participants received an email earlier this week stating:

“The KMT used the yakitori as (optional) bonus element, but EMA requested all tournaments use the same additional elements, so at the KMT we will also play with red fives.”
