USPML Update: Rules

USPML Rules are under development. We want to make sure that our rules of play are good — balanced, accurate, and aligned with commonly accepted modern Riichi rules — before we codify them as our standard. Towards this end, we are examining and discussing several rules variations and issues as we work to finalize a standard USPML rule set.For our event on January 24, and while the official USPML rules are still in-work, we are using interim rules that are similar to the JPML B Rules:

USPML News: Open Play Event on January 24

News and information from USPML – USPML are holding an event on January 24th. Read on for more details… We’ve scheduled our first Open Play event for January 24th! This event is geared towards players who are experienced enough to sit down and play without any additional instruction. If you’re a less experienced player or just getting started, don’t worry, we’ll be running teaching events in the future that will help you get started.

Introducing the USPML – the U.S. Pro Mahjong League!

I’m Charlyn Gee, from the newly founded United States Pro Mahjong League (USPML).
The USPML is a new organization for Riichi mahjong players in America. We are creating the first U.S. league system for Riichi mahjong — with standardized rules, tournaments, rankings, and more. We also want to increase awareness of the game and attract new players, and to forge a large and active national community of people who love to play.

Back in the Saddle

A while back I wrote that I was finding it difficult to get excited about mahjong. That period of my life is over and I am playing everyday again!
I’m not sure exactly what changed. Perhaps it was while making my travel preperations for the Red 5s tournament and the Cherry Blossom tournament. Or perhaps it was my mother asking me to teach her mahjong over the Christmas period. Either way, there hasn’t been many days recently when I haven’t played some mahjong.

Riichi Reaches Guildford UK

Earlier this week I asked Ian Fraser of the Guildford riichi club to write a short article introducing their club to the world and summing up their mahjong year. Ian kindly obliged so read on… According to the proverb – “Great oaks from tiny acorns grow.” A small Riichi ‘acorn’ was planted in Guildford in January 2009, in the form of around a dozen local players coming together for a club night.
