If you had a clean Japanese tile set with nice dovetailed bamboo backs and no Arabic numerals, why would you do this?!

They could have at least been professional and used a nice red crayon.
Or used the blanks somehow with non-permanent ink.
(Isn't there a way to clean that up?)
I see Flowers. Maybe it's a Chinese set? Hong Kong?
Time for the Mahjong Police to make an appearance.

Yes, they could've used the spares with stickers or re-painted the 5 engravings and wiped excess - or made more of an effort to clean 'em for re-sale!

The only pics with text are too small to check the language but most likely it's just a Japanese set made before red fives became really popular. Even modern Japanese sets with red fives will usually still have the four seasons like this one.

I was actually looking for sets similar to one of mine - an old Japanese set (see thread) without red fives. (It has eight blank spares instead of seasons and flowers.)
