Yakuman Club Revisited

Post by or2az » Sun Feb 02, 2014 5:09 am

When I first started playing this game, I didn't think I would ever get a yakuman. They seemed impossible.
As of today, I have attained 5 different ones, 2 in the last week. Having just browsed through 17 pages containing 254 posts in "Yakuman Club" (only 9 during the past year), I thought I would give the topic a fresh start, sort of like, Yakuman: The Next Generation. (oh wait, that was Star Trek)
Anyway, here are my 5, all occurring on video games:
1) TENHO (heavenly Hand) My first one. Pure luck, no skill involved. (see post, "a nice hand without doing anything")
2) PARENCHAN (8 dealer continuances) A double yakuman. 96,000 pts. (see post, "oh my god, a double yakuman")
3) SHiiSAN PUTA (13 unrelated tiles) Again, pure luck, no skill involved. Did this twice. (same post as TENHO)
4) SUU ANKOU (4 concealed pungs) Got a charge out of getting this one. (see post, "a strategy and scoring question")
5) KAZOE YAKUMAN (13+ han) My nicest one. A closed straight flush with riichi, ippatsu, pinfu, and a red 5. (posted under "kazoe yakuman")
Well, start posting and rejoin the club!

I'm sitting at only 4 Yakuman so far:

My first ever was a Kazoe-Yakuman which came about a month or so after I started playing:
Round: 南一局 (South 1) Seat: 南 (South) ツモ – 南
Haitei Raoyue (海底撈月 – Winning on the last legal tile in the wall) – 1 han
Renfonpai (連風牌 – Double Wind) – 2 han
Toitoihou (対々和 – All triples) – 2 han
San ankou (三暗刻 – Three closed triples) – 2 han
Dora 9 – 7 normal, 2 red (ドラ9 – 7 ドラ, 2 赤ドラ) – 9 han
Total: 16 han - Kazoe-Yakuman (数え役満)

My next one was a Dai San Gen on Mahjong Fight Club which was particularly sweet since it was ronned off the player to my left who'd just won about 5 hands straight from me (So I guess it was a dealer yakuman?).
My other two were both Suu Ankou, and both came during the Oui Tournament.
First one was during the Oui Qualifiers in which I didn't even realise it was a Yakuman (was counting up the Yaku normally for about a baiman till someone pointed out it was Suu Ankou <_< Damn closed Quads making me forget I was still closed).
The second actually came in my very first hand of the Oui Main Tournament (本戦) just a week later in which I actually got to a tanki wait, but a bad one. Drew three more times all of which furiten if I changed to them, on the fourth I got a 9-dot which had no other tiles currently visible and the person across from me discarded one right afterwards giving me 32000 points. (JPML A-rules don't have double Yakuman)

Enjoy.

Also noted are two real tile yakuman. First one was a Ryuuiisou. Second is a Shousuushii, although, we were playing with a "dummy hand"; so, I'm not sure to even count this one.

I don't have the exact list but it includes daisangen, shousuushi, suuankou, kokushi musou. But the most amazing thing I saw was a kazoe yakuman I had to pay, which consisted of a player calling a kan of doras and hit the same kan dora, so already 8 doras, followed by another player calling another kan and hitting yet the same ura dora. As it turned out, the guy didn't have any yaku. He got me with haitei, dora-12

I haven't had a yakuman in almost two years. So sad!
(except for Parenchan, which no one seems to like, except for me, probably because I've got it 6 times, which is half my yakuman total, and was scored as a double yakuman, and due to a combination of optional rules, turned into my highest scoring game ever.
If you're curious, http://reachmahjong.com/en/forum/viewto ... 404#p58683
I'm still not "conclusively" sure on whether it's 8 dealer wins or 8 dealer continuances, as its name suggests. Also not really sure on how to spell it, one word, two words, one a, two a's)
http://reachmahjong.com/en/forum/viewto ... 49&t=53461
Such a big deal over nothing.

Game: Mahjong Tensei, CPU 3
Started out with this hand, South 4, non-dealer

1-crak 1-crak 5-crak 9-crak 1-bam 5-bam 9-bam 1-dot 9-dot green-dra white-dra red-dra red-dra

At first glance, I thought it was Shisanputa (13 unrelated tiles), but soon realized that it was kyushukyuhai (9 terminals/honors), and I could call a draw.
It was South 4 and I was so far behind that it wouldn't make a difference, and even though I didn't have any winds, I decided to try for the yakuman. It's been a while.
As the game progressed, 2 opponents called riichi, and when I drew my 3rd wind, I called riichi too. I guess I didn't have to but I got excited, and when that east wind appeared, Kokushimuso, finally, my 1st one. Took over 3 years.
I don't remember if it was Ron or Tsumo but I don't think it matters. Pulled out a 1st place finish. Unbelievable!

Happened to find a thread on this kyushukyuhai/kokushimuso topic from 2009
viewtopic.php?f=14&t=49964&hilit=shisun+puta#p49964
I have no idea why somebody would even think of declaring it when it is such an excellent starting hand to aim for Kokushimusou
why are you being such a wuss and not going for the Thirteen Orphans
I can see why I went for it above but I don't think I should go for it below. Should I??

Everyone is paying you, therefore tsumo. Wouldn't have called riichi, especially with two already called, I wouldn't want to risk a quadruple riichi.

About 9-terminals, I never call a tie out of principle. I think this rule doesn't belong in this game. It's discriminating a certain hand over others and gives you an easy escape, which is not what Riichi Majan is about (IMHO). I feel the same about most abortive draws. Especially triple ron. You managed to discard a tile that completes all three other hands? Then take responsibility. Again, what I think Riichi emphasizes.

There's an interesting analysis of kokushi stats here: http://osamuko.com/i-told-you-not-to-go-for-kokushi/

Referee> Whether you think the rule is legitimate or not, I think you should feel free to use it if the situation requires it! The game isn't fair because the rules make sense, it's fair because they're the same for everyone. So by not taking advantage of rules that are used, even if you don't like them, you may be putting yourself at a disadvantage (although kyushukyhai is arguably rare enough that it wouldn't have a big impact). I remember calling a 5m and discarding another 5m at an EMA tournament to deny ippatsu and have a guaranteed safe discard. I loathe kuikae, but if I'm in a setting where it's in use I should make use of it if it serves my game, since other players will.

Speaking of quadruple riichi, this was a first for me.
In that Grand Prix game, league A-3, CPU level 6, all 3 of my opponents decided to riichi, and with that wareme marker in front of me and double/triple ron in effect, I could lose monster points here. I should fold but what discards are safe against 3 riichi. I risked a couple of turns and called riichi myself, hoping that abortive draw rule would be in effect. It Was! Escaped!.......this time.

Way back in my learning days (4 years ago), one of the replies to my question about folding a hand contained the following:

From Ozball (remember him?)
If you have daisangen sitting in your hand you're hardly going to fold when someone declares reach.
Well, it happened and I finally got my first one!

I kanned the red dragon earlier but got nervous when an opponent discarded the green and called riichi so I didnt kan that one.
This was one of those monthly competition games.

I didn't get the 2 Dora but I got his riichi stick, a total of 33000 pts for the yakuman. Don't know what I would have done if I drew the 7-bam instead of the white-dra . I REALLY WANTED THAT YAKUMAN.

Addendum:
I guess I would have just hit tsumo and not be greedy.
I see now it would have been a baiman, 10 han, I think.
Shousangen (little 3 dragons), Sanankou (3 concealed pongs), Toi-toi, two dragon yakuhai, and 2 Dora.
Question: if I did not kan the red dragon, would I get Su Ankou in addition to Dai San Gen?

You would have gotten Suu Ankou ONLY if you drew the white to call Tsumo. If calling ron, that triplet is considered open, and you get just Toitoi Sanankou (plus Shousangen. No dora because the kandora indicator wouldn't have been flipped).
