I made a Nagashi Mangan!

Post by Goldeneye » Fri Aug 05, 2011 12:30 am

Two weeks ago in Janryumon, I finally pulled out a Nagashi Mangan against real players, despite the person opposite me going for a chinitsu.

And since I did this in a Jukuren table, I now have a nice snazzy gold "Nagashi Mangan" title available to me to choose.

That's cool - it's fairly hard to make. When I was still learning the game I tried so many times and always failed!

So it's best not to chase it. Then one day you'll be going for a Tanyao hand, you'll keep dropping those terminals and honours, and they'll just keep on comin'... I've got it four times on Mahjong Fight Club now.

It was fortunate you only had to make 16 discards instead of the average 17 or 18 (the player opposite would've needed to find 20 x T&H for Nagashi...). Even so, you were stretching your luck on your final couple of draws when your supply ran out! :)

So your chosen title is shown on the table? I assume that's what the purple Kokushi thing is...?

I ran a replay on it with open tiles - and it turns out that I was saved by all that claiming of discards near the end, which made my last two draws turn out to be T&Hs, including that final 9 bamboo at the end. As you can see, I had discarded my last T&H at 10 tiles left, before I got extremely lucky with the draws at the end.

The tile that would have been after that 9 bamboo? It was a 4 character, a winner for North had it been discarded - but became part of the "last 14" after North made a kan of the 7 man.

My chosen title is shown on the table, and yes, I made a Kokushi Musou in a Jukuren table on my second week on the site.

The closest I got was in this game in the Billy vs SNAKEMAN (yeah, it's spelt in upper-case) game. BvS is not a MJ site, it's a Multiplayer Online game, with limited turns per day and humorous style (á la Kingdom of Loathing, but with a much better community out there) spoofing Naruto and many other animes.

One of the options is to play MJ with an AI and I got this win: http://www.glpics.com/ref/Nagashi.png
Alas, it's bugged. Emptiest Nagashi Mangan ever.

I actually made Nagashi Mangan in 3 player Mahjong just now at JRM.

That said, at least in JRM, you can declare North wind doras and still qualify for Nagashi Mangan in 3 player Mahjong there. I am not sure if that is a standard rule in 3 player Mahjong in terms of Nagashi Mangan.

As for making Nagashi Mangan in 3 player Mahjong, I am not sure if it is easier or harder than in standard 4 player Mahjong. It is probably easier if you didn't declare North doras and just simply discarded the North wind tiles.
