That is true, but just to clear up any confusion, in actuality,
SAN ANKOU (3 concealed pungs) is easier to get than a TRIPLE PUNG because the SAN ANKOU can be any pungs at all, including winds and dragons,
while the TRIPLE PUNG (san shoku doukou) has to be pungs of the same number in 3 different suits, and even open, it's rare.
(There are only 9 different ways to make a TRIPLE PUNG)

Nothing special this week, just a haneman and a baiman.
Haneman (7 han) was a toi-toi with a dragon pung with 3 dora and a last tile ron.
Baiman (8 han) was a riichi-ippatsu-pinfu-tanyao with 4 dora.
Being EAST made the hands respectable at 18000 and 24000 pts.

Chanta and San Shoku (with dealer winds)
Not a great hand and certainly not a lot of points (only 5800), but it looked so nice stacked with a mixed triple chow, especially with the east winds and not a fourth chow of 123.
Since I hardly ever go for chanta, I thought I would preserve it.
Incidentally, I have seen chanta written 3 different ways: 混全帯么九........... 全帯么.......混全帯么........any reason for this?
Barts Guide says the first symbol (of the five) indicates "mixed", the last looks like the number 9, and probably is.
Is there one writing in particular that is more correct than the others?

Cool hand, it's always nice to combine a couple of less common yaku - should be worth more than three han really! Extra points for style. 8)

This is a case of informality vs formality - you might use 全帯么 instead of 混全帯么九 the same way you would usually say Chanta instead of Honchantaiyaochū, or Ittsū instead of Ikkitsūkan, or Haneman instead of Hanemangan (archaic?), or Tsumo instead of Menzenchin Tsumo Hō or indeed San Shoku (as above) instead of San Shoku Dōjun (even though there are two "San Shoku" yaku - the other is much rarer). Also sometimes characters can be omitted from Japanese spellings if the meaning remains clear in context.

The terminals (1/9) and honours (winds/drags) are collectively called the 么九牌 (Yaochūhai) so I guess the name is connected to that.

Millington's book (The Complete Book of Mah-Jongg) has a long section of Chinese terminology, although sadly there are no kanji illustrated. He says that the original Chinese term Yaochiup'ai is used to mean either just the terminals or the "major" tiles (terminals and honours). The initial character (presumably 么) denotes the number 1 in dice games so it's literally "1 & 9 tiles".

In Japanese the terminals are referred to as the 老頭牌 (Raotōhai); Millington gives the Chinese precursor as Laot'oup'ai which means "old head tiles".

More like my hand of the year. A kazoe yakuman.
Got real lucky with the ura dora's.
Riichi, Honitsu, San ankou, and White dragons.

Wow, no posts on this thread in over 7 years;
Where does the time go?

Exactly 11 months to the day (well almost), a nice dealer yakuman of little four winds for 48000 points.

Hello,
I am not only new to this website, but also very new to the game of Mahjong it self.
I am currently playing on an app, I just started this week. Will someone please explain a winning hand to me. I do not understand how it was won.
The had is as follows: green-dra red-dra white-dra :east :north :south :west 3-crak 6-crak 9-crak 7-bam 2-dot 5-dot 8-dot
This question may be easy for some, but like I said, I do not understand.
Please Help thank you in advance.
Tommie

Hello Tommie. Welcome to the forum and to mahjong too. :)

I wonder if the app uses Mahjong Competition Rules. In MCR you can get "Lesser Honours & Knitted Tiles" (12 points) for having any combination of red/white/green dragons, E/S/W/N winds, 1/4/7 from one suit, 2/5/8 from another suit and 3/6/9 from the third suit. You had all seven honour tiles (dragons and winds) so that would be scored as "Greater Honours & Knitted Tiles" (24 points).

(Also in Japanese mahjong there is an uncommon optional special combination called "Shiisan Pūtā" which you get for having a starting hand with thirteen tiles that cannot form sets with each other plus a duplicate of one of those. There is also a rarer optional rule called "Shiisū Pūtā" for fourteen unrelated tiles like you have here. None of the fourteen tiles could make pairs or sets with any of the others.)

The tension mounts!!
Will I get the 2-dot or the white-dra ?
A very nice hand or the yakuman daisangen?
Or nothing at all if I lose the hand.

And it still feels good.

So cool. Really cool. :D

Hey! How are you doing?
It's been a while.
Forum kinda slow, not like the old days.
Where are you living now?

I'm in Ireland.
Trying to have a relaxed life, but found out, after being promoted I don't like my current position. Requested to go back to my previous job, but it will take time, a few months.

So, I'm just waiting patiently. Hope I can actually wait until the roll back is done. I do worry, might reach burnout point before that. Would be sad, I like my current workplace.

Good to hear from you. Hope everything works out the way you want.

And now, back to the topic:
Got an immediate ron on this one, a renho, if I remember correctly, but BARTS guide lists it as an optional hand, and this game obviously doesn't recognize it.
Close to a mangan with the two dora, though

Ignatius - Hang in there! Maybe seek support in the current post and for your welfare if possible.

Steve - Renhou could also be blocked if a player had already called Chii/Pon off someone else's first discard.

Shame not to get the recognition but still pretty cool to do - and certainly better as the Ronner than the Ronned! Nice hand regardless too.

Very similar to the one I had last May.
I think if I had gotten the :east instead of the green-dra ,
It would have been a nice 24,000 but getting the yakuman was still pretty satisfying.

Still having fun after 10 years on the forum.
Wow, time does fly!
Thanks guys.
