WWYD 2015-03-24

Post by saitym » Tue Mar 24, 2015 8:59 pm

I was playing with a random account and I came across this hand.
It was south 4, last round, 5100 points away from 1st and equal points to my kamicha but I am third due to the seat. I am last oya WWYD?

I'd discard 6-crak , widest path to 5800 points and the win I think.

It looks like you're going to need 3 han for 1st place so a half flush alone is not going to get it done. You need the straight also which means you need that 7-crak .
I would discard a 6-crak .
In a video game, I would toss :north without hesitation because flushes are easier to get when your opponents don't know what you're doing.

Thanks for the input !! always appreciated

I discarded the 6-crak like many of you chose but i posted this initially because i wasnt so sure if my decision was so clear cut.

In terms of getting to tenpai with the required points, 6-crak is the best but i wasn't sure if limiting my wait to 7-crak was the best idea, and by throwing :north , you can initially reduce you tenpai chance but in the long run you might end up with a better wait by drawing other manzu tiles thus maybe increasing your chance to win.

Ill probs throw the 6-crak again in the same situation but wanted to know if someone thought different.

But if you are oya then you can play again if you win isn't it? Also you get more points. You will still want to make something to get toward first place, but possibly you can have the risk of possibly making even more points during next hand too.

You have good shapes to further develop this hand. Discard the pair of pei to go for flexibility instead of relying on 7m.

If 7m is being ponned, you can still make use of 8m and 9m upon drawing them.

Repeat after me. Open honitsu sucks. Open honitsu sucks. Open honitsu sucks. It is only good for a quick win (especially if you have dora) or when there's other yaku present. In itself, it's highly inefficient in terms of points earned, especially if you want to take 1st. Sticking yourself with a 2900 hand point hand will require extreme luck to take 1st so I would just go for whatever the fastest win is in this scenario. And hey, if in the unlikely scenario 1st is careless enough to deal into you, it'll all be good as well. Getting yourself into a position where you can win now is never bad.

I would have not called that 1 man. 23 is the easiest part of your hand to improve, and there's no point in rushing that fast. I'm also not sure the order in which you drew the tiles, but having same suit tiles clustered like that is a good shot for ippekou. Interestingly I thought discarding N would be best, but... http://tenhou.net/2/?q=334456689m44z 9-crak is the best discard.

But this is true! Discarding 9 man means we can be tenpai if we pon 3,6 man or N and also means we aren't dependent on 7 either but we can still use it.

In game it's harder to reason, but the 6 serves the same purpose as a 9 except it can work with more tiles.
