What do you get if you cross mahjong w/ pachinko?

No, it´s not a joke!

I came across the word Jankyuu in an online dictionary, defined as a \"combination of Japanese pinball* and mahjong\" which obviously piqued my curiosity!

After a little light Googling I found this video of a Jankyuu machine which has been restored to working order in America. Cool! B)

Has anyone come across this before? Have you got one, Tom?! :silly:

*I think bagatelle is a better comparison.

I found a playable online game!!

http://game.5stone.net/online/jyan.html

Press the top blue button to get your initial 14 balls and use the handle at the bottom-right to launch them.

Once you have a hand of 14 tiles you can use the row of blue switches under them to discard one. You get another ball, launch it and get another tile, etc. The red counter shows how many more turns you have.

The second blue button (agari) is used to declare a win. I got Honitsu on my first attempt! :woohoo:

:south :south :south :west :west 1-crak 2-crak 3-crak 6-crak 6-crak 6-crak green-dra green-dra green-dra

After about 3 or 4 hands, I was starting to notice that I was getting the EXACT same draws every time...

Initial draw (in order):
:east :south 8-bam 9-bam 6-crak red-dra :north :west :east red-dra :east :south 8-bam 9-bam

After this comes:
6-crak red-dra :north 7-bam :south for ippatsu
At this point I\'d have riichi + ippatsu (because the 7-bam immediately before the :south would make me tenpai, so I\'d riichi):
:north :north :south :south :south :east :east :east 7-bam 8-bam 9-bam red-dra red-dra red-dra

The pseudorandom number generator is improperly seeded.

Edit: Playing on gives me this draw pattern:
:east :south 8-bam 9-bam 6-crak red-dra :north :west :east red-dra :east :south 8-bam 9-bam
6-crak red-dra :north 7-bam :south 8-bam 9-bam 6-crak red-dra :north 7-bam 3-bam 8-bam 9-bam 6-bam red-dra 4-crak 7-bam 3-bam 8-bam 9-bam

This yields the possibility of what would be a Suuanko in regular play:
:north :north :south :south :south :east :east :east 9-bam 9-bam 9-bam red-dra red-dra red-dra

Edit: The game has a different draw for the first hand only. After that, it seems to be stuck on this pattern. Also, this only works if you hold down the lever for a little before releasing it.

I guess you can\'t expect a hardcore physics-engine in a free game but it should at least be able to produce a reasonably randomised output.

I only played a couple of games before I posted so didn\'t see any pattern, although I did notice that you can control the launch speed.
This yields the possibility of what would be a Suuanko in regular play:
If only all games were so flawed (generous)!

I think it\'s just nice to be able to try the game without having to find a machine. Isn\'t the internet great? :silly:

I don\'t expect much in RNG fairness from a free Flash game, but !ouch! is seems really flawed!

In four games, I get twice
:west :west :west 1-crak 1-crak 1-crak 3-crak 4-crak 6-crak 6-crak 6-crak green-dra green-dra green-dra.
and once
:west :west :west 1-crak 1-crak 1-crak 3-crak 3-crak 6-crak 6-crak 6-crak green-dra green-dra green-dra

Indeed, maybe I trend to set always the same speed, unwillingly.

With each successive post my initial Honitsu is looking less impressive!

...and there was me thinking I\'d finally mastered the subtle interplay of luck and skill required for MJ (in all its forms)!

These machines used to be popular in pachinko parlors and were played for real money but have since all but disappeared. You can still find them in large arcades, generally outside of the Tokyo area.

Yeah, if you do a quick click, the ball tends to stay on the left; holding it down a split-second longer makes it tend towards the right. But from what I can tell of the engine, you reach a maximum power quite quickly, and holding it down any longer than that will still fire at the exact same max power.

The draw sequence I posted above assumes you fire every ball at max power.

That was fun, but once is enough! Waiting for suuanko tanki - but I couldn\'t hit the 4Characters...

Talking of combination games, has any body tried biribooru? Ten pin bowling on a long table with a billiard cue...

After seeing another random reference to Jankyū today I thought I'd bump this old thread for anyone that missed it before.

The flash game I linked in my second post still works. :) (complete with authentic arcade background noise)
