I did buy the PS4 at launch but only because I play the Battlefield series, BF4 was a PS4 launch title and it gave the full 64-player experience (compared to 24 players on the PS3) so that was the killer app for me but otherwise I would've waited a while.

I don't suppose that mahjong games specifically would benefit much from the increased power of the next generation of hardware but there is a tradition of new mahjong games being available at the launch of a new console, then again phone and other mobile platforms are so dominant now so who knows...?

The newest mahjong title on the Switch is also the oldest.

VS Mahjong is the latest in the extensive 'Arcade Archives' series, based on a Nintendo arcade-game from 1984!

It's released worldwide but seems to be two-player and Japanese in-game text only.

If you're really serious about your retro gaming, get this Switch stand designed to look like a Nintendo VS arcade cabinet.

In surprise news, Sega and Microsoft announced today that Yakuza Zero (prequel), Kiwami and Kiwami 2 (remakes of the first two games) will be coming to Xbox One in early 2020 and are among the 50+ titles confirmed for the Xbox Game Pass subscription service. Assuming no content cuts, these three games will bring Japanese mahjong with an English interface to the XB1.
Yakuza Zero is now available for the Xbone.

Clubhouse Games has been announced for the Nintendo Switch coming this June.

It's a compendium of 51 minigames (see link) including Riichi Mahjong and it should have online multiplayer.

I have the original Clubhouse Games for the Nintendo DS, known as 42 All-Time Classics here in the UK.

So I finally bought my first Android/iOS device - a 10.5" Android tablet. A new world of gaming awaits! :o

I've got six mahjong games so far - the popular Mahjong Soul and Kemono in English and four titles in Japanese.

It was very easy to get the Jp titles. I just opened this thread in my tablet browser, clicked the store links, then clicked Install. 8)

A sad thought... with Adobe Flash discontinued from the end of 2020, the Riichi browser game at gamedesign.jp is no longer playable.

The free solo play with English version served the community well. I'm sure everyone here must've played it over the years.

o7 (salute)

Meanwhile I continue to update this directory with occasional new releases on Switch and various Yakuza titles.

Haven't seen any MJ games for PS5 yet (except for backward-compatibility on PS4 titles).

 I hadn't considered that as being a casualty of the loss of Flash.... o7 indeed. It was where I got a lot of my very early practice with Mahjong in.

Cool, yes that launches okay.

This topic just came up on the mahjong subreddit where it was noted that Game Design have the Japanese-language version of their Flash game running in HTML5 instead.

https://www.gamedesign.jp/flash/mahjong/mahjong.html

(It should be trivial then to make another English version using the original translations... Maybe it'll happen.)

I see they also have this cute mini version working where you hold seven tiles and make two sets and a pair. I almost got Little Three Dragons!

https://www.gamedesign.jp/games/minimahjong/

It was also suggested on Reddit that you can play Mahjong Soul against bots.

The odds are so skewed in that mini variant.

A bot just got a closed flush - Haneman for only eight tiles.

Then I had two consecutive starting hands in Tenpai.

The mini mahjong doesn't have a four pair hand...

Weird to have the flush but no seven pairs. Maybe because the Yaku name specifies the number of tiles?

I guess there's no San Shoku or anything that specifies three or four sets. I wonder if any Yakuman are allowed...?

Chiihou!地和!

I like that chacter, maybe it's because looks a bit like the characters you could find in an old manga from the 70's...

Yeah, but it's kinda weird seeing characters added when all the other graphics are the same as the full-size version.

Speaking of which...

Sounds like they are actually working on converting their English-language MJ to run in HTML5. \o/
