Overview of current mahjong video-games

Post by Barticle » Thu Feb 18, 2010 1:46 pm

Hi gang. I've been gathering information about mahjong video-games for a while now so I decided to pull it all together in one place, primarily for my own reference but hopefully others will find it useful too!

I'll use this thread to list mahjong games that will run on European/American consoles (and nothing too historic). I'm only listing *proper* mahjong titles here - hopefully no tile-matching solitaire games will sneak in! Of course most of these games use Japanese text (unless stated otherwise) which you might find a bit daunting. Certainly it would prove challenging to learn mahjong if you don't know the language but if you're familiar with the game already then a little educated guesswork can get you through a few basic menus and options - and you can always post on this forum if you need help.

There are several online stores that ship games worldwide. One of the biggest is Play Asia (I think they're shipping Sony games to Europe again now) and there's also Yes Asia who have a good reputation. Personally I either download direct from the Japanese Playstation store or import from reliable Japanese sellers on eBay (remember to check their feedback) - I've had good transactions with asiaestore, sushief_inc, jgamers, japan-excite, solarisjapan, jp-gift, dora_ts17 and play-japan.

Release dates [month/year] are given in square brackets after each title (some are quite recent or even forthcoming at time of writing). I've also provided at least one link for each game - in most cases to the official website - so you can check for screenshots and other info. If the website text looks like "イカサマ・特殊ãƒ" then set your browser encoding to Shift-JIS to display it correctly in Japanese (so you can use a browser translator). I've added CERO age ratings for some platforms; for the others please check the official websites if this is important for you.

I've written full guides for the mahjong games marked with a red asterisk (*) - just click the GameFAQs link in my signature to access them. 8)

For new players in Yakuza and Judgment games I'd recommend using the link to my illustrated beginners guide on the Yakuza wiki.

I welcome your comments and contributions to this thread - if you would like to recommend these or other games. Thanks to Benjamin, zzo38, Tina, Aetheron, Poochy, Gneuz, sasuraiger, Esh, b4k4, ryulusus, Torgo, XFRod, Moah, mrrrx, peterb, wavemotion, Kime, Mattskinned, Ignatius, rotkehlchen, or2az and Tpu76 for posting game info and Sketcz for the PSN blog article; also to GameFAQs of course for hosting my video-game guides.

Sony Playstation 5

The PS5 is the latest generation of Playstation console; it launched in November 2020 but initial hardware supplies were very limited for several months.

The standard model has a Blu-Ray drive to take PS5 and PS4 disc games, although a very small percentage of PS4 titles won't work. The cheaper PS5 'Digital Edition' doesn't have a disc-drive so it can only play downloaded software.

PS5 games aren't region-locked so you can play imported disc games. You can create new user accounts (or use existing foreign accounts) to download games from other global regions but you may need to enable Game Sharing, for example to play a downloaded Japanese title on your US account.

Sony Playstation Vita

The Playstation Vita was the successor to Sony's PSP handheld console (see below), launched in Japan in December 2011.

Vita game cards are not region-locked so you can play physical games bought from any territory, however downloadable games/content can only be bought from the territory within which your PSN account is registered. Also the Vita lacks a UMD slot so it cannot play PSP game/movie discs.

In addition to the Vita titles listed below, at least two dozen PSP mahjong games are also available via the Japanese Playstation Store.

Sony Playstation 3

PS3 games are region-free so you can happily play titles from other territories. The console supports multiple user profiles and you can switch between them easily. Registering an account in Japan or Hong Kong gives access to the PSN stores for those territories. Movies however are region-locked and even with backwards compatibility you cannot play imported PS1/PS2 game discs, but you can download classic PS1 titles from Asian PSN stores (see below).

Nintendo Switch

The Switch launched worldwide in March 2017. It's a hybrid system that can "switch" between being a home (TV) or portable console. It's not region-locked - you can import and play physical games from other countries and create additional user accounts for other regions to download eShop content that's unavailable in your own.

The portable-only Switch Lite (light switch!) launched in September 2019. It's smaller, lighter and cheaper than the original version but it cannot connect to a TV via a Switch dock and it requires Joy-Con controllers (sold separately) for games that don't support portable mode and for some functions (HD rumble, IR camera and motion sensors). Games and saves can be shared between two Switches.

Unlike the console listings above, the iOS and Android app lists here are not intended to be comprehensive records of everything available. Instead I've just listed apps that I've seen recommended and others I've found that look good (but might not play good). These lists aren't regularly maintained either, but I will add anything you recommend.

There are a lot of mahjong solitaire games out there so make sure you check descriptions/screenshots so you know what you're getting. You'll find a lot more true mahjong by searching on 'mahjong' as kanji (麻雀), especially on the Japanese and Chinese versions of the online stores. Look out for a Dora indicator if you want Japanese mahjong. Not all games include online multiplayer and those that do sometimes require a subscription. A few apps only run on tablets and not phones, and others are only compatible with specific devices, so again it's important to check the details.

The iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch are becoming a popular platform for gaming. Tina posted about one and from there I found some others in the App Store and I've added a few more since too. They look really good!

I have played the DS stuff in passing and I can fill in some details.

To avoid:

Spirits stuff: the stuff in this series is really D-grade, bare-bones budget stuff. Not worth what you\'re going to pay.

Beach de Reach: This is the same core game as Haoh copy/pasted into a JP-language visual novel.

To not avoid:

Mukoubuchi has a pretty extensive training mode with \"what do you cut\" and \"what are your waits\" problems, a scoring quiz, and a reference book mode that lists everything you could want to know (in Japanese).

MFC DS is still the best by a mile.

Welcome aboard and many thanks - that\'s exactly the sort of information I was hoping for. Have made a few updates above.

I guess you get what you pay for. It\'s a shame - I like the idea of their multi-game collections
Beach de Reach:
That title\'s pretty catchy after you translate it. :silly: (which I hadn\'t done before)

I see the similarities on the in-game screenshots now you mention it.

Ooh, sounds good!

Also fixed Chi for Shi above. Play Asia have it spelt wrong! :P

I suspected as much. I know others favour it as well, and the PS3 version is great too.

Thanks again. B)

@Barticle

You should apply for the title of \"next Mahjong researcher\". \"Inspector Kanji\" doesn\'t suit you anymore so you open up a new field of Mahjong science... :)

I don\'t know - I still seem to be spending a lot of time inspecting kanji! B)

I must admit I love finding out more about the finer details of the game, its terminology and uncommon rule options. I just wish life was like The Matrix movie and I could download instantly into my brain a complete knowledge of the Japanese language (and Kung Fu of course)! Would make it so much easier...

But where\'s the fun then? You would be finished with your research in seconds. What would you do with the rest of life time? Playing Riichi?

See PM

Ah, the "thrill of the chase"? I\'m not convinced! :silly:

BTW I\'ve just removed Yakuza 3 (the western version of Ryuu ga Gotoku 3) from my PS3 list above. In studying the announced trophy list for the game a week or two ago I noticed that the mahjong and shogi trophies have been removed. Sega have now confirmed officially that some elements have been cut from the game, although they haven\'t mentioned MJ and shogi yet.

It will be a great shame if mahjong has been removed from the new game - it would be the only English language MJ game for the PS3 (to my knowledge) and would\'ve introduced a lot of people in both America and Europe to Japanese Mahjong...

I\'ll update here when we know more but for now I didn\'t want people to buy (pre-order) the game based on the info I\'d given here.

EDIT: I can confirm now that Sega have cut mahjong, three other minigames and twenty side-missions from Yakuza 3. It\'s still a good package overall and it\'s great to have the game available in English now but I\'m unimpressed at the removal of MJ.

I\'d like to say a few things for the iPhone apps.

Mahjong Mobile is terrible. As the review on the site claims, it does in fact crash VERY often. I can get maybe one and a half hands in before it crashes. LESS if I mess with the options. It makes the app virtually unplayable.

However, I\'d like to add in this app:

Mahjong Nagomi
-Full four-player Mahjong
-In Japanese AND in English
-A HUGE amount of options, including the ability to turn certain hands on or off, including Yakuman hands.

Bad points:
-Engrish
-Hand names are in the American naming system, so it\'s Pung and Kung instead of Pon and Kan. Not so bad, unless you you learned the game through the Japanese names. (Good luck figuring out what a \"Great Wheel\" is.)

Hi Esh. This is great info, many thanks! :) I\'ll add this to the listing.
(Good luck figuring out what a "Great Wheel" is.)
Presumably it\'s the optional yakuman Daisharin?
