A live stream is like a scheduled TV show which is broadcast at a specific time, but often it will also be available as a VOD afterwards (VOD = video on demand). The Mahjong News article has a direct link ("Live Link") to the webpage where the stream will be played but it also has the player embedded so you should be able to watch the stream without clicking through to Niconico.

I've only ever used Niconico one or twice and that was years ago. The language setting at the very bottom of the page lets you change the header and footer text to English but you can also get a rough translation of any remaining Japanese text using your web browser translator. You might require a login to view content but you can use a Facebook or Twitter login for this.

It's probably worth checking now if you can view something so see if you can watch this video (not streaming live): http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm20624629

Fun fact: Nikoniko (ニコニコ) means "smile" but it's also a slang term for seven pairs (explained in my PDF guide).

OK. Hit that link and changed some text to english. Then hit box that read "watch with application" and 2 choices appeared, niconico and nico box. Hit the 1st one.
This appeared.

I assume I don't need to install this.

Hitting the video directly led me to the Facebook/twitter/google login you mentioned.
I assume this a better way to proceed?

Anything else I should know about?

Niconico is similar to Youtube - it's basically a website that plays videos (and sometimes live streams) so you can access it via a web browser.

The app would give another way to view content but it would probably still require a login.

Did you get the video to play? Try one of the login options.

(It's worth watching to the end, although I had posted it here before about three years ago.)

I did and was able to watch the excitement over that nice flush, which I think was also called something else, nine gates maybe?
Got me thinking about the WRC stream. I suppose the commentary will be in Japanese.
I wish there was a way to hear it in english.

I found it. One of them still worked. I even had a post in that thread, way back when.

What exactly do we mean by "player embedded"?

Yes, it's an incredibly rare Nine Gates hand - it occurs in around 0.0005% of winning hands.

An embedded player means you can watch the stream without clicking through to Niconico! The same video-player box from the Niconico webpage (where the live video will play) will also appear on the Mahjong News webpage when and while the stream is live.

Sad. Horrible. Tragic. Just Unbelievable. Hotels 2.9 miles (4.7 km) apart.
