Riichi in Korea

Post by ReachNL » Wed Feb 11, 2009 11:45 am

There is a small group of mahjong players in Korea who play riichi mahjong, and would like to organize an international tournament. They have planned a tournament this month, but this takes four weekends!
They have contacted me, as the webmaster of http://www.mahjongnews.com, to give them some publicity. First thing that I advised was to plan the event on just one weekend… B)

Their spokesman, Jaewon Yu, is a very kind person. The tournament has started by now, with 15 subscribers.
Their website: http://www.kml.or.kr/

I quote from his latest mail to me:

I am interested in holding the international mahjong championship because of your e-mail. However, because we have many problems, we consider the international mahjong championship maybe next time. An urgent problem is a place to play. Currently we have only one place, named \"Rubix\", to play mahjong. There are just 4 automatic mahjong tables imported from Japan and China. For this reason, we always hold the competition here, but this place is still very small. Only 32 players can play mahjong simultaneously and this is not enough for international championship, I think.
I am trying to get sponsors, but it is hard these days as you know.

Please visit their site (in Korean; switch on your Google translator). It is great to have riichi friends in Korea.
