Feedback on new forums

Post by Barticle » Mon May 17, 2010 6:18 pm

Hi Jenn & Gem. Good to see you have the new forums (fora?) up and running now. :) Am sure you're still very busy getting things straight but here's my two cents... (okay, more like a quarter!)

Currently you need to login to be able to view posts. This would reduce the number of new users joining as they can't "try before they buy" (so to speak). Also it's a pain for me since I don't like using auto-logins! (especially on my phone)

The "board index" view is missing a couple of good features we had before: the thread title on the most recent activity on each forum and the little list of five threads with the most recent activity at the bottom. Is it possible to add either or both of these features (or similar) on the new system? They're really handy for catching up on the most recent posts (and jumping straight to them). Would be good if possible, but at least there are links for viewing new/unanswered posts if not.

Avatars are disabled. Can I have my cat back please? :) They make it a lot easier to follow a discussion.

Local time display is great and the alert for newly received PM's in the header is a nice feature.

Good to have email alerts on forum replies working again too.

I know you can add new emoticons to the phpBB forum package so hopefully you'll be able to add the tile icons again? They're endlessly useful.

Just noticed the option to add a poll to a post - that could be fun. Could be used for WWYD as well.

Posts from before the transfer look a little odd in places - I'm getting apostrophes and quotation marks preceded by a backslash and forum code tags not working in signatures. Also tile emoticons (and some smileys) absent where they were used before - if they were added to the new system with the same codes as before perhaps that would fix this...?

And last but by no means least... kanji/kana support, finally! Woohoo! :D

I hope you find my criticism constructive. I really appreciate the work you both do for the site and I expect you have plenty of it at the moment, but if you're working on the site currently then you might as well look at my issues while you're at it. ;)

ありがとう!

Bart

Setting a new signature has overwritten previous occurences in my historic posts, so that's another thing tidied up.

tiles are back.. ;)
green-dra red-dra white-dra :east :north :south :west

The old posts have a different layout and the emoticon needs to be separated with spaces in order to be displayed.
