Request a Column: When to open a hand

Hey guys,

I would like to request a column on when one should open their hand and when to keep it closed. I know I have a bad habit of either opening too early, or keeping my hand closed longer than I should. Recently i\'ve been working on this and think i\'m getting better, but I still cannot largely tell when the time comes to open up my hand.

Any thoughts?

When to open a hand?
- Not before you know what yaku you are going for.
- Preferably when you already have a yaku.
- If you don\'t intent to defend at all.
- If you need a quick win to stay East, or to shorten the game while you are the leader in points.
- If points are not a problem for you. Remember an open hand score less than a closed one (no riichi, no ippatsu, no ura-dora, no pin-fuu, no menzen tsumo, ...).
- When you didn\'t need / can\'t use the flexibility a closed hand provide.

There is more to say, but in most case you don\'t open your hand at all.
