The cards are called "Harifuda," and represent the numbers One through Six (left to right). There are seven of each card. I learned only a little about the game played with these cards (it's a much less interesting game than the hanafuda games, at least that's my opinion).

I found an English page describing the rules of the game (Tehonbiki) and some variant card designs.

I think it not some variant card designs. It is three different card which you must use on game.

As is now evident :lol: I only skimmed that page - didn't read it in detail. For a game played with cards marked simply with numbers one to six, it looks pretty darn complicated!

I think it must be reasonably obscure. I asked my friend at work (born and raised in Japan) about the game and she'd never heard of it. Perhaps it's only played in gambling dens?

Very strange. These cards can now be found on Japanese Internet auction sites. If they did not play anybody right now, would not have been suggestions from stores
