Re:Hikkake reach

Well, it\'s not a rule of the game, but there\'s a style of playing in Japan ("janki-ryu", I think?) where they take it on themselves to make discards in 3 seconds or less, never throw an honor on the first discard, never make a hikkake reach, and some other things. I can understand the 3 second di...

Re:Jan Ryu Mon

So I got through the registration. I have a log-in and everything. But I can\'t download the client. The instructions are telling me to click a log-in box that isn\'t there! The attached image shows what I\'m talking about. Clicking the large round red button just gives me an error telling me I need...

Re:Reading Hands on Jan Ryu Mon

I\'ve been busy lately, but I\'ll get around to making some more of those videos soon. Next up is an annotated pro replay and a video about the ins and outs of reading hands- including when not to do it. That sounds excellent. I\'ll be on the edge of my seat! By the way, do you still need a proxy t...

Re:WWYD 5/16

9 is not altogether safe (dealer discarded it in the first discard, so it is still possible he is waiting for this tile) He could be waiting on it, but he can\'t ron on it. Furiten (sacred discard) and all that. So it\'s safe for you. If you\'re really unlucky, the player to your right (West seat) ...

Re:WWYD 5/9

I really should have considered dropping the souths it looks like. I am far too set, I suppose, on having my head already formed in a hand and am not eager to take it apart. That, as has been pointed out, exclused two han worth of yaku: pinfu and tanyao. I think July and Johnston had a much better a...

Re:WWYD 5/9

Six pin. The hand is mostly formed, the south winds can be used as a head (and deny the yaku from other players). Discarding anything else either breaks up a set, or limits the possibilities for a mixed triple run which could, in this hand, viably be in 567 or 678. Alternately you could cut the 8 pi...

Re:WWYD 5/16

Seeing as the one pin is the dora, and the nine of bamboo is a pretty safe discard (six of bamboo in West\'s discard, and a nine of bamboo in both North and East\'s discards) I would cut the nine of bamboo. That\'s my initial reaction, of course, but it\'s probably what I would decide within whateve...

Re:Confusing name question!

I\'m pretty sure the Chun refers to the Chun. The Chan is probably from \'Chanta\' which is a hand, if I remember the Japanese names correctly, composed only of sets which contain honors and terminals (with at least one run).

Re:Heirarchy of Two-Sided Waits

Interesting, I hadn\'t thought about this.

Red Fives can only be used in 3-6 and 4-7 waits (unless one is waiting on a five of course) which makes the choice of the number 5 for a bonus tile make a bit more sense, I suppose.

Re:Greetings from a newbie with questions :)

A cut 7 is also not the best indicator that 4 is safe, since one can cut a 7 and still be on a 1/4 wait without chance for furiten. However, tiles discarded upon tenpai are more likely to be close to the wait, so it is less likely that a 1/4 wait is being used if a 7 is cut in those situations than ...

Re:Greetings from a newbie with questions :)

Furiten is in effect regardless of what the tile you ron on is as long as one of the tiles of your wait (in this case a 2/5 wait) is in your discard. That two prevents you from a completing your hand on the five. So open waits are tricky, you have to watch out for that. Really though, with a bit of ...

Re:Greetings from a newbie with questions :)

An honor pair won\'t be sufficient for the necessary Han. That\'s why the hand you described where you stole four times and had a green dragon pair couldn\'t win. Honor tiles count as \'End\' or \'Outside tiles.\' Since your hand mixed sets which were fully inside (2-8) with sets that were not fully...
