Mahjong vs the Virus

I was able to keep playing live until March 21st, in Arizona, when the community center was closed.
Meanwhile, from across the ocean,

Re: What rules do you use? 3.0 (2020 edition)

One more question on Agari Yame regarding this piece in Barts Guide, to satisfy my understanding. "Under the optional Agari Yame rule, if the dealer (east) wins the final hand of the match and they are leading on points they can choose whether to play a continuance as usual (and risk losing) or fini...

Re: How to deal when there are 2 winners

there is no other point in the game where the dealer is allowed to pass on their dealership if they are in first place and win a hand........... so why should South 4 be any different ? I believe South 4 is different because it is the hand that satisfies the requirements for a complete japanese mah...

Re: How to deal when there are 2 winners

So my understanding is that the thinking is, it's not fair to the other players to be able to end the game early, just because the last dealer is in front. But is it fair to extend the game just because the last dealer is fortunate enough to win the last hand. That's like penalizing him for winning...

Re: How to deal when there are 2 winners

On browsing the link above regarding riichi rules, provided by Shirluban, I was surprised to see so many X's for Agari Yame. (and for bankruptcy too) I employ both rules in all four of my mahjong groups and the ladies really love it and find it very exciting when it occurs. We had one occasion where...

Re: Tsumo overrides ron in WRC?

Understood. I still don't like the "until the next player discards" part. I would prefer; A late ron is allowed, even after the next player has drawn a tile, if that player has not allowed common sense ample time for the ron to be called. (3-4 seconds, 5 at the most) I've seen video game apps that a...

Re: Tsumo overrides ron in WRC?

A late ron is allowed, even after the next player has drawn. Calls for ron can be made until the next player discards or declares a win by self-draw, riichi, concealed kan or promoted kan. Are you saying that a late ron is allowed even if the player calling ron had more than enough time to do so (a...

Re: another gameplay question

Very interesting. I suppose this NO YAKU-PASSING UP A WAIT-TEMPORARY FURITEN situation is not a common occurrence but now that my groups are starting to go for tenpai late in a hand when a draw seems imminent, it could happen. Explaining that you are not actually passing up a wait for a WIN that put...

Re: another gameplay question

After reading your replies again, and more research, I need a bit more clarification regarding " FURITEN with no-yaku waits, before I attempt to explain this part of it. 1) 1-dot 2-dot 3-dot 4-crak 5-crak 6-crak 6-bam 7-bam 8-bam red-dra red-dra 5-dot 5-dot If my opposite player discards a 5-dot , w...

Re: another gameplay question

Understood. Furiten vs temporary furiten.
I assume this is also meant to prevent one from targeting a certain player in riichi and making you wait a turn for targeting a certain player when not in riichi.
Now comes the fun part of explaining it to the ladies.
Thanks guys.

Re: another gameplay question

Need to refresh my memory on the following situation. One of the ladies in my group called RIICHI and had 4-dot 5-dot 6-dot 7-dot 8-dot in her hand, needing a 3-dot 6-dot 9-dot for the win. She had a temporary brain freeze and overlooked a 6-dot for the win when discarded by her opposite player. She...

Re: Pung vs Chow: who wins?

The head bump doesn't occur as often as the pung/chow thing as I have never noticed having a problem with it.
Most apps seem not to allow double or triple ron or have the option to turn it off.
