Re: Newbie introduction

But, I would like large pieces for my hands, and older eyes. They don't have to be these competition pieces I mentioned above, but I'd like a decent set, color, quality. I don't want to "upgrade" to better stuff. What do you like to use and play with? Here is a picture of the set I play with. Tiles...

I believe this is what you were looking for.
It's still on YouTube in one video instead of 4 parts.
A good watch.

Re: Five Year Summary

Thanks guys, The ladies got inspired and decided to have their own mahjong party with the entire group. Fun day for all. It was a good feeling, sitting there, outdoors, playing riichi, observing and listening to what I created, occasionally finding it hard to believe. You guys were there too, in spi...

Re: another gameplay question

I was asked this one the other day after the game. 8-crak 8-crak 8-crak 3-dot 5-dot 6-dot 7-dot 8-dot 5-bam 5-bam 5-bam 7-bam 7-bam After a turn of not calling riichi, an opponent discards 7-bam. She asked if she should have called riichi, waiting for the 4-dot , or now, having the opportunity, pon ...

Re: another gameplay question

It does seem that hindsight does make the Honitsu decision look better, but let's go back to when I actually had to make the choice. The discard after the pon of :north . Honitsu decision: discard the first 7-dot 1-crak 2-crak 5-crak 5-crak 8-crak 8-crak 7-dot SSSNNN Toi-Toi decision: discard the 1-...

Re: another gameplay question

phpvuVAajAM.jpg A year and a half later, another gameplay question, wow, time flies. Toi-Toi vs Honitsu. Does it make a difference at this point in the game? I decided toi-toi when I ponged the :north and discarded the 1-crak . Then drew the 6-crak and tossed the 2-crak . Then drew another 2-crak a...

Illegal riichi situation

During our latest mahjong game, one of the ladies in my group called riichi and placed her stick down. A few turns later, she realized she was in error and was not in riichi. Since we didnt want to be mean, we allowed her to continue playing as a "dead" hand, discarding each tile she drew from the w...

Re: Kong during riichi

I suspected as much, after numerous attempts. I guess it's safe to assume that if a player calls an illegal kan during riichi, it's probably due to a lack of full comprehension of the rules, perhaps thinking they might score big with the kan dora/ura dora, and then later finding out it is not a vali...

Kong during riichi

I need an example of a hand, in riichi, where if you kan, the wait will change, but for the better. Naturally, this would be an illegal move and result in penalty. In the hand 4-crak 4-crak 4-crak 6-dot 6-dot 6-dot 7-dot 7-dot 8-dot 9-dot :south :south :south, the waits are 5-dot 7-dot 8-dot . If yo...

Re: oh boy!

Well, six months have passed and I'm back on the Oregon coast and my original mahjong group. It's been almost 3 years since I started converting these ladies to riichi. No one is playing Chinese anymore. WOW!. We play twice a week with 2 tables running. They are all out to beat me. I have to be at m...

Re: oh boy!

Checked out 3 nearby community centers in the Phoenix area where they play weekly mahjong. As expected, it was all the American version, but at the 3rd one, when I told them I play Japanese, the reply was, "oh, we always wanted to learn that". My eyebrows did a MR SPOCK, and so,........here we go ag...

Re: oh boy!

Still going strong. Taught 4 more people Japanese Mahjong in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, this winter. 3 were new to the game, 1 was an American Mahjong conversion. Now it's off to Phoenix for a while. Just to refresh my memory, if I have a 5-dot 6-dot 7-dot in a winning hand after calling riichi and ...
