Re: Looking for a set

Some early sets had red 8 dots, without being red dora. (This pre-dates Riichi mahjong.) There's also modern red dora other than 5's (3 and 7, sometimes 1 I think), and/or non-red (green, gold, spotted, rainbow?). And old sets with phoenix and dragon kanji for dragon tiles. But I'm pretty sure it's ...

"Tile is shinny -> must be a hint -> discards dora."
That guy has no idea what he's doing.

Re: another mahjong book

Yes, you would have to crave a blank tile.
Paint or marker pen rubs off more or less quickly on a flat tile.
You can use a marker pen and "seal" it with tape.
It will sit slightly differently in the wall, but what will stand out more is the fresh back among the old scratched ones.

Re: Rules of Mahjong explained in pictures

It looks very good! :D A few minor points: • In "Dealing the tiles", I would avoid the term "open", as it's often used to mean "meld". I'll propably say "players look at and arrange their tiles". • "Flower replacement" could be rearranged for clarity. • In "Kongs" and "Making concealed kong", I'll s...

Re: How to deal when there are 2 winners

Hello and welcome! Some rules allow the two (or even three) players to win, each winning hand being scored separately. Other rules give priority to the winner closer to the discarder, in turn order. For example, if East discards the winning tile and West and North claim it for a win, then West is th...

Re: Tsumo overrides ron in WRC?

Are you saying that a late ron is allowed even if the player calling ron had more than enough time to do so (and didnt) before the next player drew a tile? Yes. The problem here is to define what "more than enough time" means, and how it's checked. A time limit can't realistically be enforced, sinc...

Re: Tsumo overrides ron in WRC?

Ozball got it right. But it more have to do with the first two sentences of the chapter: Calls for chii and pon/kan can be made until the next player draws . Calls for ron can be made until the next player discards or declares a win by self-draw, riichi, concealed kan or promoted kan. A late ron is ...

Re: another gameplay question

Once someone declares riichi and let pass a winning tile, they can no longer claim any tile for a win (i.e. until the hand is over). When not in riichi, they can't ron on the same turn they let pass a winning tile (i.e. until their next draw). This applies also to "winning" tiles not giving any yaku...

Re: Do you ever discard when declaring a win?

Hello and welcome. Completing a mahjong hand ends the game, so you do NOT discard. What variant are you learning? I've only heard of one single rule in the world where play continues (Sichuan Bloody Rules), but I've never found any clear and complete description of it. And even then, the winner stop...

Re: another mahjong book

I wouldn't recommend Scott's "ultimate" book, as I don't find it really informative and has a lot of useless text.
I also have his "A to Zhu", but haven't took time to read it.
