Re:Hello! (And about buying a riichi-set in Tokyo)

If you\'re just looking for a decent set and mat, the place to go is Donki. Anywhere else and you will pay significantly too much.

Re:Yakuman and Reach

It\'s generally accepted theory that if you\'re waiting on tsumori suu anko (have to self-draw to get it), you should riichi to deter other players from trying to win since you don\'t want to win by discard anyways. Any other yakuman, I think it\'d have to be extremely situational. The only other co...

Re:Dutch Red 5 Tournament

Another idea for enforcing timing rules would be to allow each player 3 seconds per move with the option of thinking an extra 7 seconds for two moves each round. I think a system like this would reflect decision making in riichi much more realistically since most decisions can be made in about a sec...

Re:Dutch Red 5 Tournament

I second Jenn\'s idea. If the new \"final round\" rules aren\'t enough to fix the timing issue, making renchan dependant on an actual win should solve the problem. If not, I think resources are better spent on player education than making fundamental changes to the rules. Eliminating renchan is some...

Re:Kokushi Musou - rob a con. kan

No. Being able to \"rob\" a concealed kan with kokushi is a commonly known rule but generally known as a local variant; most \"official\" rule sets do not employ this rule. A common variation is that you can rob any concealed kan with *any* yakuman.

Re:Akko de Pon (DS/Wii game)

It\'s a fun game but loses it\'s novelty quickly. The tetsu series for PS2 is better imo.

Re:What do you get if you cross mahjong w/ pachinko?

These machines used to be popular in pachinko parlors and were played for real money but have since all but disappeared. You can still find them in large arcades, generally outside of the Tokyo area.

Shoot me an e-mail about a month before you\'re in town and I\'ll try to organize something.

Yoyogi park? Really? Never seen much mahjong there. It\'s not really played in the open in Japan. Maybe you\'re thinking of China?

30fu 4 han should be rounded up to 8000 and 2000/4000. It is just ridiculous to have to call "two thousand, thirty-nine hundred" in a game.

Re:EMA vs Swiss/Buchholz system

I agree with Shirl and Morten. Incidentally, a higher uma was what I recommended from the beginning :P. 5/15 is enough to be significant, 3/9 isn\'t. There\'s a reason for this. Adding a significant bonus to place encourages players to, in the last few rounds, play not to get the most points, but to...

Re:Mahjong for Macs

Thanks for the hint! Pro Kiwame seems to have a long history. There were some sites listing it in relation to emulations of Super NES and Arcade Machines. There are a lot of Pro Kiwame games, but only Pro Kiwame Next is built around teaching you how to play well. I don\'t particularly recommend any...

Yes. A playstation 2 game called Pro Kiwame Next has an excellent tutor mode. Unfortunately, it\'s in Japanese and out of print.

Actually, full stop. I managed to get an interview with one of the directors and he says they\'re actually still in development. I\'m not sure why they have something online right now at all, but according to him its not for use. Oh well. Thanks to everyone for trying!
