Mahjong Friends Online - new online platform to play nearly all Mahjong styles in realistic 3D

Mahjong Friends Online is now open to the public. This is "beta testing" - everybody is invited to play for free, absolutely no registration required. The only thing we ask for - please send us your comments and suggestions for improvement. It is a new take on "table and tiles" concept - the game gi...

Re: another mahjong book

Speaking of blank tiles - it is quite common to have any number up to 4 spare blank tiles being included with Chinese sets. They are not the same as Chinese style white dragons - the white dragons display a blue frame, and the spare blanks are, well, completely blank. I have a common Chinese set, wh...

Re: So, aparently, I'm not there yet.

If you like yaku building, such as iitsu and sanshoku, you should definitely try playing MCR :) It also has "Mixed Straight" (123-456-789 is 3 different suits), "Mixed Shifted Chows" (like sanshoku, but shifted by 1, e.g. 234-345-456 in 3 different suits), "Pure Shifted Chows" (in 1 suit, can be shi...

Re: So, aparently, I'm not there yet.

I am sure you know about Daina Chiba "Riichi Book I", but it must be mentioned every time people speak about Riichi strategy, so here it is: https://dainachiba.github.io/RiichiBooks/ Now about the efficiency trainer - it is a great app, and I have practiced with it a lot. I found that for me, the mo...

Re: Rules of Mahjong explained in pictures

To: Ozball Thank you :D The tile images are all mine :) I built them myself in Sketchup. To: Shirluban Thanks a lot for your comments! They are very helpful :D "Dealing the tiles": agree, will change it now. "Flower replacement": I wish I knew how to improve it... Maybe it would help if you could po...

Rules of Mahjong explained in pictures

I have built a website that teaches rules of Mahjong. Everything is explained in pictures. The whole website is a series of infographics. Still, all the explanations are very detailed. I am trying to be very clear and to avoid any ambiguities. The idea is that playing Mahjong is fun, so learning to ...

Re: Help

In some other Mahjong variants, you can win simply by getting 4 sets/sequences + 1 pair. However, in Japanese ("Riichi") Mahjong, not only you have to get 4 sets/sequences + 1 pair, but you also have to satisfy at least one of “yaku” conditions. If you can prepare you hand for winning with 4 sets/se...

Re: OK - I finally jumped into MahjongSoul today...

Mahjong Time has been around since at least 2005. It is in English, with partial support for several other languages. Plays Riichi, MCR, American, Taiwanese and HKOS on ongoing basis and in scheduled tournaments. Additionally, there are tournaments in Zung Jung and Washizu. For Riichi, there is choi...

Re: OK - I finally jumped into MahjongSoul today...

To be fair, Mahjong Time has had English, USD payments, option for tiles with indices and no-download game for many years already. The downside is that their player population is smaller. But it has other advantages - such as implementing EMA rules, for instance.

Re: Tsumo overrides ron in WRC?

I agree that trying to limit the time for calling ron would be problematic. I like the WRC rule that allows late ron as it is. In addition, there is one more reason for allowing late ron - sometimes finding your waits can be tricky even for experienced players, particularly so with closed chinitsu h...

Tsumo overrides ron in WRC?

The document "World Riichi Rules 2015 Clarifications and Additions" says "a win by tsumo must always trump a ron call". Does this mean that after a player declares ron, the player next in turn after the discarder is still allowed a chance to attempt drawing a tile and possibly declaring tsumo on it?...

Re: Pung vs Chow: who wins?

Yes, for an app it is obviously a bug. Note however, that in some rule sets for IRL play the precedence can depend on timing. According to WRC rules, if a call for chow is made clearly before the call for pung or kong, the chow will take precedence. Only when the calls were made simultaneously or al...

Re: Do you ever discard when declaring a win?

The complete description of Sichuan Bloody Rules can be found here: http://mahjongpictureguide.com/pdf/SBR-Reference.pdf And of course, the winner does not discard. In Sichuan Bloody Rules, the winner: - says "hu" - turns their standing tiles face down - takes the winning tile and places it face up ...
