Re: Akagi

You really do yourself a disservice starting the story here : But it will answer your question, how does Akagi meet his demise. That would be like reading the last chapter of a mystery before reading the rest of the book. Better that you start from the beginning , and by beginning, the beginning of ...

Re: Mahjong Book by Whitney

The earliest I've found red fives is it's introduction during the 1970 Japanese World Exposition in Osaka (the Osaka Worlds Fair). The number 5 was chosen because the 5p most resembles the national flower, the sakura, and originally there were four red fives, one for each of the main islands that ma...

Re: Defending strategy: suji

The only suji it describes is the basic one, so I was wondering about whether these strategies work. There are far better players that can comment on strategy than me, but I can speak of my own personal experience, and for me, it would be disastrous if I were to start ignoring suji set clues. Your ...

Yeah. Those are good too.

Re: Tileset with translation?

Yellow Mountain imports has multiple set styles with Roman numerals and Arabic letters on them. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/P/B002Q8UR3Y.01-A3IXHP9WB8UQLD._SS1010_SCRMZZZZZZZ_V338136356_.jpg If you want cheap, Toys Я Us carries a really cheap mahjong set. It's the one I let my kids play with...

Re: Akagi

The actor who plays Akagi and the one doing Washizu, doesn´t have the impact the characters had in the anime, for example. The old man does a better work than the youngster, but he doesn´t look as mad Washizu is. The young one, just look like the average handsome actor, famous for being young and l...

Re: open pinfu (jumbo shrimp)

There is no way to get 1 han 20 fu. Bottom line is this: The ONLY way to get pure 20 fu is a closed pinfu hand. An open pinfu will earn that 2 fu, and thus round to 30. But since it must win by tsumo to earn just 20 fu (otherwise it would earn 10 fu for a closed hand won by ron) the minimum number o...

Re: open pinfu (jumbo shrimp)

Hi or2az, Here's a link to an article I wrote about the history on the pinfu hand. http://www.mahjongnews.com/en/news/trivia/3431-getting-something-for-nothing In short, the 2 fu for an open pinfu is outdated and should be dropped, but old habits die hard. :? Edit to add: but to address your second ...

Re: oh boy!

First off, that's great! It can be a challenge finding live players, so you've unlocked that achievement. Even better that you've started teaching riichi! You've unlocked that achievement as well, earning you four gold coins. Any comments or future suggestions regarding the above will be appreciated...

Re: Our first tournament - questions.

I've added your tournament to the Mahjong News calendar.

I took a stab at the name of your tournament, best I can tell it's the Big Owl Taikai Tournament. If that's wrong, I can fix it.

Best of luck!

Totally off topic, but Ignatius, I love your signature quote!

"Life is as beautiful as you want it to be, but it´s only one. That´s why you must not get tired of it. Don´t care if you don´t say something that seems "important" because your mere existence is important for someone."

Re: Haifu (牌譜) analysis

Hi. I have a nit-picky question. I noticed you wrote it as haifu, yet all the Japanese sources I've seen pronounce it paifu (as indicated in the phonetic alphabet as ぱいふ). I'm just curious how common is it in practice to pronounce it as haifu in Japan. Some example sources that define the pronunciat...

Re: sū fon renda (wow!)

The main strike against it is that there are other kinds of bad hands that don't get the easy escape. So why is nine terminals special? The nine-tiles-nine-types abortive draw isn't based on logic or strategic improvement to the game, it's a superstitious abort. Nine (九, kyū) is pronounced similar ...

Re: Mini-Review of Mahjong from A to Zhú

I wonder if someone (reader or author!) could please post a brief summary of the concept and origin of "Meow Meow"? :) (I know mahjong players often favour long late-night sessions but I trust it's unrelated to the designer drug of the same name!) Ha! Not to resurrect an old thread from the dead, b...

Re: WWYD 2015-01-21

I'll probably get some criticism for this strategy, but I might start by throwing the 9-bam I want to try to develop the red fives, and to do that it would be nice to be able to call discards and speed the hand up. For that, the fastest yaku is tanyao, which with just that alone is approaching manga...
