Re: Analysis of a mahjong hand

If you discard the 6-bam you get more winning tiles and you can kong the 5-bam . (Discarding the 4-dot would allow to kong both the 3-dot and 5-dot but since otherwise they would be winning tiles it's kinda counter-productive.) The hands have the same amount of winning tiles. 3-dot 3-dot 3-dot 4-do...

Re: Saki-咲 Live Action!!

The Special episode was uploaded long ago. Someone even made an English subtitle file for it. You can find them in the same place as the movie; I'm afraid you'll have to go deeper than Youtube this time.

It's basically a flashback/characterization dump for the other 3 teams.

Re: Saki-咲 Live Action!!

The movie, with Chinese subtitles, has been uploaded on one of the newer anime torrenting sites. So if you know Japanese or can read Chinese, I guess you can go watch it. As one might expect, it's not very good. Most notably, they seemed to lack the budget for special effects, and watching real tile...

Re: another gameplay question

369s has 7 tiles left. 25m has 6 tiles left. Discarding 3/9s, you have pinfu + tanyao/iipeiko + dora3 for 5 han, while discarding 5m you have dora2 with possible pinfu and iipeiko. The extra value of the 25m wait is worth the one less tile. Discarding 9s is slightly better, since you can draw 3s or ...

Re: Nanikiru? (WWYD)

Obvious 6-bam . The 5-way wait may look cute, but it's a 5-way pair wait. The hand already has two possible pairs. There's no need to not take the best iishanten and keep both hatsu aka2 and sanshoku aka2 available.

Re: Hi! I am a Japanese who loves riichi mahjong!

Hi Ronki, I'm Iapetus from Finland. I learned of mahjong through manga. First Mudazumo Naki Kaikaku, then Saki, then Akagi, and so on. At this point, "麻雀って楽しいよね" is pretty much an axiom in my life. But some reasons to me falling in love with the game: it never gets old. There's always a new, interes...

Re: Do you riichi?

Declaring riichi increases your chances to tsumo. With suuankou it's standard to riichi to maximize your yakuman chances.

Re: Defending strategy: suji

It's quite annoying that "suji" refers to two very different concepts: the 1-4-7 ("omote-suji") and the ura-suji stuff. Even in this topic, it's causing confusion and people trying to explain them together as one entity. There's way too many other "suji" words too - you may hear "uchisuji" or "tesuj...

Akagi has his turn after Washizu's henchman (Suzuki). So the temporary furiten ended when Akagi took his turn.

Re: Tenhou based league games?

For example umas, EMA with red fives uses 30/10 and WRC with no red fives uses 15/5. You might want to aim for about half of that - 15/5 with red fives and 9/3 without. The ranking point tables are at http://tenhou.net/man/#DAN . You lose a fixed amount of points determined by your Dan rank for plac...

Re: WWYD 2015-06-05

You lose 8p as well if you drop 3p. Seven pairs too - drawing 67s can put the hand into iishanten for that without any further drawback to tanyao pinfu. Furthermore, by discarding 3m, you can simply discard 4m when you get to iishanten, losing nothing. But if you discard 3p or 4p, you will have to r...

Re: WWYD 2015-06-05

I'm going with 3m here. The 3467m is redundant, so discarding from it leaves the widest path to iishanten, and the iishanten shape will be great too since the 33488 will remain intact. The furiten at 25p is annoying, but chances are you won't end up tenpai on it and even if you do, you can go with t...

If it's two hanchan per round, then the uma matters to decide the top 2 of the two hanchans.

Re: Our first tournament - questions.

Full knockout is too brutal for the half who lose in the first round. Either play round robin and take the top 4 for the final match, or do like the WRC did and allow losers to continue playing losers' tournaments. Oka is dumb. Uma should be 10/30 if you use red fives and 5/15 if you don't. This mea...

Re: Discard quiz from strategy book (riichi edition)

I could use an explanation on Q2 although I don't think I'm going to agree with it in this case. I can see not calling riichi and perhaps getting a better (ryanmen) wait but taking a step back from tenpai in this case....well....I wouldn't do it. Tanyao and a red five seem to be enough here to avoi...
