UK Open Report

It was a typical english morning for the second UK riichi open in Guildford. The field was significantly greater than the previous UK open with 48 participants. There were also several new faces attending coming from mahjong university clubs across the UK. Several players from France had arrived to compete and also a small but strong selection of Finnish players. Last year’s winner, Ans Hoogland, was also present to defend her title. Following the trend of recent European riichi tournaments, there were five Han-chan planned and so the morning started early at 8.30am for registration. However, unlike recent tournaments, there was no bell for 15 minutes before the end.

French Open Report

Although I’ve posted it very late, a special thanks to Tom Mustonen for reporting on the event and Sylvain Malbec for his photo contribution.
The French Riichi Open was held on 18-20th of March on the venue Salle Rossini in Paris, only a kilometer from The Louvre. There were 64 players participating from six different countries. The tournament consisted of 8 han-chan sessions divided into two days, four sessions each.

Riichi Mahjong Open, Baden 2011

We used to be a trio here at ReachMahjong.com. Garthe, Gemma and myself (in alphabetical order) work on the site and play in the mahjong field. However we did not hear that Gemma won the Baden Open over the weekend until today, and this we found out on our own. My first instinct was to completely disown Gem. Then I realized that while Garthe and I are stinking up our leagues in Japan, Gem is the only one actually winning things… So I put my head down and got the info of our 2-time champion, Gemma Collinge. We love you Gem! Congratulations! Read on for the report from the tournament organizer, Alexander Doppelhofer.

We will Washizu Again

Last July, history was made with the first-ever Washizu Mahjong Tournament in The Netherlands. This year the 2nd Washizu tournament will take place on Sunday, April 17th, the day after the Cherry Blossom event in Nijmegen.
