Jenn’s Corner #10: Las Vegas
Mar 26th, 2007
by jenn
Here we are, back in Tokyo after our travels to our homeland. Since my last post, we have added a scoring section to the rules, and a report on JPML’s first ever Women’s League. Our next immediate goals (besides staying up to date on columns) is to get an interview with Michi Yuuki, JPML’s first-ever Women’s League Champion! Today, I want to let you all know how our trip “abroad” went.

In Garthe’s Hands #9 – Full Straight & 3 Concealed Triples
Mar 20th, 2007
by garthe
Long time no hands!! I bet you all thought with the lack of new hands columns that I must have finally run out of new hands to throw at you. Not the case! Though it should be encouraging to know that we are at least half way through them all at this point. In fact, it should be even more encouraging to note that the 16 hands I’ve given you so far plus the two I’m going to give you today make up 3396 of the 3428 hands I’ve completed in 1544 games of Fight Club so far this year. That’s more than 99%! So pay attention for at least this column too, and then you can ignore me in earnest for a few weeks. Without further ado, I introduce to you: One Suit Straight, and 3 Concealed Triples.

Gemma’s Journal #8 – Mahjong in Japan
Mar 15th, 2007
by Gemma
Hey everyone again. I’ve just come back from Japan so I’m going to postpone my entry on scoring another week to tell you my experiences of playing and watching Mahjong in Japan. (Convenient yet good excuse! I’m getting there, I promise, especially now with the good emails I’ve received offering good sites and tips to use. Thank you!)

Jenn’s Corner #9: Tournaments
Mar 6th, 2007
by jenn
A few too many days have passed since the last column and I have to apologize. I was planning on having this up on March 3rd and here it is, already early morning on the 6th. Last week was extremely busy with Gemma visiting Tokyo (that means lots of real-mahjong sessions), Garthe playing in Champion’s League, add in another mini-tournament on Sunday and finally preparations for Garthe and my trip to Las Vegas!!

First Ever Womens League Champion!
Mar 4th, 2007
by jenn
Michi Yuuki
While she is still new to Japan Professional Mahjong League (JPML), Michi has spent the last few years stirring up a storm in the league. She not only moving up to C3 League this year from D1, where she started, but she quietly worked her way up to the final table in the first JPML Womens League ever and took the whole thing to write her name in the history books. We sat down with Michi and as a special surprise, Asatarou Nada, the president of JPML joined us for coffee as well. I was pretty nervous to be interviewing Michi in front of Mr. Nada, but he bought us coffee and since that meant that I didn’t have to expense it to my personal account, I tried to act grateful and hide my nervousness.

In Garthe’s Hands #8 – Mixed and Pure Outside Hands
Feb 27th, 2007
by garthe
How are you all holding up remembering all those hands? We’ve covered quite a few already and I wouldn’t be surprised if some of you are wondering how much longer I can keep coming up with new hands to throw at you. Don’t worry; after 14 of them now, we’re almost halfway through! Hang in there. The hands I’ll be covering the next few issues will be comparatively rare, but can make for impressive scores when they’re pulled off. Today let’s cover two more that are closely related to each other: Mixed Outside Hand, and Pure Outside Hand.

Gemma’s Journal #7 – Missed Win Rule continued
Feb 24th, 2007
by Gemma
So I’ve been wondering what I should write about this week. Jenn suggested that I write about scoring, and I started trying to but then I realised I was still completely lost! It’s the thing I’m currently working on but there are still quite a few holes in my understanding of it all. To be honest there doesn’t seem to be much logic behind it at all! Well I shall persevere and you can expect an entry explaining the basics of scoring from me soon.

Jenn’s Corner #8: Mediators and Tournaments
Feb 20th, 2007
by jenn
I arrived at SNPM’S Ryuou-sen match to cheer on one of my favorite Pro’s of all time, Yuukou Itou. My plan was to rush off to JPML’s Phoenix Cup Finals right after, but because of the length of the Final game (of 6), there was no time, so I just said my good-byes and headed home.

In Garthe’s Hands #7 – 3 Color Run & 3 Color Triples
Feb 16th, 2007
by garthe
Last week I got to tell you about my absolute favorite hand so I guess this week I have to go to the other extreme and tell you my most hated. It’s strange because many pros consider it their favorite. I don’t know if it’s just because I want to be different or because I’m bitter or what, but this hand bites me more than it feeds me and I just can’t forgive it. I HATE Sanshoku. I hate it so much I don’t even want it to have an English name. How about 3 Color Runs. That sounds poopy enough doesn’t it?
