Osaka 3-Player Mahjong
Jan 15th, 2013

Lately I’ve been playing a lot more Mahjong than I did last year. But, I’m not playing the mahjong that everyone else is used to. I’ve actually been playing in parlors in Osaka and the main game over there is with 3 players not 4. It’s actually much simpler than the To-tenko rule set used for 3 player games in Tokyo, but there are a few differences that might throw you off.

Jenn’s Corner: Riichi/Reach/リーチ in Seattle…
Jan 6th, 2013

I went to my parents’ house for the Christmas holiday. One of my favorite things to do when I’m back in near Seattle area one of my new favorite things to do is play a few games with the Seattle Mahjong Group.
The boys (I have heard a rumor that female members exist as well but this is something I have yet to confirm with my own eyes) didn’t disappoint and 8 players got together in a huge beautiful house, with a heating drawer full of yummy chicken, to play our favorite game.

Wow, it’s been a while since I wrote a proper Jenn’s Corner. I know the updates have been slower than I’d like, but thank you everyone for sticking through this with us. We’ve got a few projects going on that we can announce in the summer and I promise (again) that we’ll be updating more regularly here as well.

Jenn’s Corner: Mahjong in 2011

I have played live mahjong exactly 3 times so far this year. I’m on my way to play Mahjong Fight Club now (literally as soon as I post this for tomorrow’s publishing), but games are very different than playing live. So far I’ve played at League (4 games), at North-Kanto League (4 games) and at the make-up session I played for North-Kanto League. Basically I went from really crappy to crappy to not bad at all.

Jenn’s Corner: Waste of Time
Nov 21st, 2010
by jenn
OK, time is moving way too fast. There are too many deadlines, too many tournaments, too much gaming and testing, too many updates and not enough time in any day of the week. Not to mention handling our own homes and lives, if you can imagine that those things even exist.

Jenn’s Corner: Other Games
Nov 1st, 2010

As I write this, Garthe is on his way to Macau for a poker tournament. I’ll be joining him shortly, although I’ll mostly be covering the event and working, not playing. On the other hand, if I have time, I’ll definitely jump at the chance to play a few hands in the cash games and maybe even the ladies’ event.

Jenn’s Corner: Out of Practice
Oct 25th, 2010

I have to play mahjong everyday to keep my game up. When I had the parlor last year, I was playing about 8 hours of real mahjong everyday. My game was better then than it has ever been. Lately I’ve been playing real mahjong once or twice a week, I play Mahjong Fight Club between 2 and 5 times per week, and I play online on Ron2 and Mahjong Club. It feels like I never play.

Jenn’s Corner: It’s All Over

Wow, how long has it been since I wrote a Jenn’s Corner?! Things were so incredibly hectic with the WSOM and my other work keeping me busy that I left most of the site up to Gemma and the rest of the team. In the end we had a great series and things have finally settled down.

Jenn’s Corner: I Blew It

I wanted to wait until after the North Kanto League to write this month’s column. Now I wish that time hadn’t come. Last month I wrote about all of the opportunities I had and how scared I was of losing these chances this month. Well, my worst fear came true.

Jenn’s Corner: Pressure

For the first time since I joined JPML, I feel like I am playing well. It feels great, but it also feels horrible. The potential there is huge, and I feel like knowing me, I’ll get really close and then lose it. (more…)
